Pretty but a bit hard to use.
I have been slightly disappointed in this now that I have had it for a few weeks. I have had some major difficulties separating the two pieces on multiple occasions now. The suction between them can be too much and the fact that there is nothing to hold on to very well makes it quite a struggle. I have tried using a towel and grasping around the bumps that hold the lid in place and that has been the best I have figured out so far. If I am in a location where I don't have anything I can use to aid in gripping the bottle I have had to give up. Since it usually contains a bit of water when I am opening it the fact that it is wet and the metal having nothing to get purchase of means I'm usually just sliding around, squeezing with all my might trying to get the two pieces to rotate and separate at all.The other issue I had is that the bottle is not as durable as I expected with it being steel. I either received the bottle with a slight dent or managed to dent it within the first 24 hours of owning it. When I realized it had the slight thumb sized impression about a quarter way up from the bottom I was in the middle of packing for the trip I had purchased it for. I got the bottle right before going on a trip and didn't have time to deal with returning it. I just didn't expect that anything I could do to it would be able to dent it with the exception of dropping it (which I know I didn't do). The dent is very minor and not visible so it isn't a big deal; it is just a concern that I thought worth mentioning for others to know about. In some ways, it is almost helpful as it ever so slightly ads a bit of grip but not really enough to do much good.If the bottle had a handle or any sort of rubbery grippy area I don't think I would have any trouble separating the parts. I am now trying to make sure I don't push it together tightly and if I'm not expecting it to be able to tip over I will even leave a bit of a gap so that it won't be so hard to open the next time.It is a pretty bottle though quite heavy of course being metal. The water I have put through it so far (just tap water from various cities in the USA) comes out tasting great. I am just using the standard filter it came with as I don't have a need right now to purify it.

Works as described - not for long backpacking trips where weight is paramount. Great for hotel travel.
The other reviews are correct - it is more for hotel travel / office than backpacking. That being said, it is wonderful to be able to have clean, reliable water wherever it may be you are traveling to. Fits comfortably in a carry-on backpack. It does in fact require some downward pressure to force the water through the filter. In my mind that is a good thing, - you know it is working. I filled it up upon arriving at my hotel room and knew I had clean water for the day. I chose not to carry it around with me all day from site to site, but could have if the weather had been warmer. If you are backpacking in the woods and are extremely concerned about weight, this may not be for you. It does weigh 1 1/2 lbs. I like that you do not need a straw, nor lights, nor chemicals to have clean drinking water.I think this is a excellently designed product and plan to purchase a second one as a gift for my sister.

The trip I took it on was great and I didn't come home with stomach problems from ...
Be careful taking this through airports. I didn't want any trouble so I left it in my checked bag. I found out when I got home that some guys checked it and couldn't figure out how to open it, they actually peeled the bottom rubber thing off. So word from experience if you travel out of the country take it apart and label what it is so no one breaks it trying to figure out what it is.The trip I took it on was great and I didn't come home with stomach problems from the water thanks to this beauty.

Fresh Water
Great for traveling to areas that may not have the greatest water. The top half is a bit difficult to separate from the bottom half. After you use it a few times you get the hang of separating them. You may need a gorilla with rubber gloves to open it initially.

Does what it says
Great product. Used it twice already... I'm not sick, so the lake water I filtered last week must have been clean, haha.Showed it to a buddy and he wanted one. So I just bought a second one to give to him.I do a lot of hiking/camping/kayaking so I bought extra trail filters. I expect to use this for years to come so I hope the company is around still making filters in the future.

Excellent product. Great design, and high quality. A bit heavy compared to other filters.

Great on the trail!
This is a great device to carry on longer treks in the bush. Add long as you can find water, you can have potable water. I normally carry a MSR hand pump but the Grayl is handy, easier to use and maintenance.

But I still like it a lot
A bit bulky and a bit awkward to use. Also leaks sometimes because the lock thing won't lock properly. And a bit pricey. But I still like it a lot!
